This three day certificated course focuses on the early identification of emotional problems and the ability to provide early support. The course helps staff recognise behaviour as a solution to emotional distress and offers helpful strategies to try to prevent the development of more severe problems. The course offers an overview of mental health and wellbeing in relation to young people and provides each participant with an ‘Emotional First Aid’ toolkit.
The course aims to:
- promote positive emotional health; - provide support and reassurance; - assist (with the appropriate adult(s) in the young person’s life) the accessing of appropriate services; - undertake risk assessment to help prevent harm to self or to/from others; - create an emotionally healthy environment with the young person to find strategies that help overcome emotional distress; - look for early signs of emotional distress and intervene where appropriate; - reduce stigma and increase knowledge and skill base for those involved in supporting others. - develop a support network with other Emotional First Aiders to share skills.
