Course Description Governor induction part one provides newly appointed governors with a broad introduction to the roles and responsibilities of governance. The course also explores the governance setting in Cornwall, who’s who, where to access support and, most importantly, will cover the three core responsibilities of governance.
• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
• Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
• Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

Cost:
No charge for local authority maintained schools or academies that have purchased the School Effectiveness Cornwall (SEC) SLA.
Face to face session - £75.00 for those who have not purchased the SEC SLA.
Zoom sessions - £60 for three sessions for those who have not purchased the SEC SLA.
Please note that for cancellations received less than 7 days before the start of the course a cancellation fee of £25.00 will be charged.
 
Course Objectives The course aims to:
• Provide an introduction to governance across Cornwall schools and academies
• Cover the roles and responsibilities of governance
• Introduce you to how governance can work effectively

The course structure:
The course has been designed to be delivered either on one day, face to face from 09:30 to 16:00, or online in three evening 2-hour Zoom Sessions. Governors will be expected to attend all three Zoom sessions to complete GOV1. You will be notified nearer the time on how these sessions will be carried out. The session will cover:

Session one: 01/07/2021 09:00 - 11:00
• The strategic role of governance in our schools and trusts
• Governance structures in schools and trusts
• The responsibilities of school governors

Session two: 01/07/2021 12:30 - 14:30
• The information we require to know our schools
• Why vision and values matter
• How governance is organised across the school year

Session three: 02/07/2021 09:00 - 11:00
• Building relationships based on trust
• The financial responsibilities of governance
• Governors responsibilities related to:
- Safeguarding
- Staff well-being
- Pupil exclusions
• Sources of help and support
