Course Description |
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ASSESSMENT WILL TAKE PLACE ON A SEPARATE DAY (AFTER A PERIOD OF CONSOLIDATION)
The purpose of the Mountain Bike Instructors Award Scheme is to promote the safe enjoyment of mountain biking in an off-road environment.
The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in a variety of off-road environments in the UK other than in winter conditions. It introduces training, experience and assessment in a variety of testing conditions in off-road country.
The scheme is recognised throughout the UK and by AALS.
The course fee includes MIAS registration and logbook fees. Residential option may be available, please ask for information if you are interested. |
Course Objectives |
Level 1 - Successful completion of assessment enables approval for the leadership of mountain biking in Country Parks, Canal Towpaths and Permanent Low-level Cycle Trails and non-wilderness areas where help is almost immediately accessible.
Level 2 - Successful completion of assessment enables approval for the leadership of mountain biking in Country Parks, Canal Towpaths, Permanent Cycle Trails and low level rides on recognised bridleways below 599 metres in wilderness terrain. Candidates must be in possession of the Walking Group Leader Award (WGL) or equivalence (i.e. South West Moorland Walking Leader Award), or be able to demonstrate significant navigation skills, backed up by logged experience of navigation in remote areas.
Syllabus: Group management and the responsibilities of the group leader, navigation access and conservation, general skills, technical skills, personal equipment, camp craft (where applicable), weather.
Assessment: Is normally a separate procedure but for candidates with considerable previous experience it may be possible to include it as part of the two day course, if this applies to you please contact the centre prior to the course start date. Full details of the assessment process will be available during the training course.
Programme: The course will be as practical as possible with day one being a mixture of classroom, theory and practical sessions and day two being exclusively in the saddle.
Kit: Participants should bring their normal Cycling kit including wet weather clothing. It is expected that participants will bring their own bikes, however if needed we are able to supply bikes at an additional cost. Please contact the centre at least two weeks prior to the start date.
